Social knitwork co-creation at Social Scaffolding, The Sovereign Centre, Weston Super Mare, 20 May - 4 June 2023
Weston Super Mare was the second venue in Social Scaffolding's 6-venue, Arts Council-funded tour in the South West of England between April and November 2023. in 2022, before the tour, we faciliated two pilot exhibitions in Taunton and at the Emerge Showcase at Bath Spa University in Bath. Weston really was the beginning of the pompom revolution! It was very lovely to show so many people how to make pompoms and to witness their pleasure in the process - choosing colours, winding the yarn, talking and laughing - and their delight as the wound yarn was transformed as it was cut. It was
Most people who made pompoms wanted to keep them, which was absolutely fine; some tied them to the installation. I really do wish I'd kept a tally of how many pompoms were made though!
Annoyingly, the space where I set up to make pompoms was rather dark again, because the lights, rather bizarrely, went off after an hour or so. I used my angle poise again, but the lack of light made it hard to see the colours of the yarn, and, at times, it made it hard to see what we were doing, sadly.
